About Vinton & Lauren

Vinton Smith: My name is Vinton Smith and I work with Elanco Animal Health to help dairy farmers, veterinarians and nutritionists improve animal care and well-being so that they can produce healthy and nutritious milk.  Every day, I strive to live up to the many principles and values I learned while growing up on a dairy farm. Most importantly, the vinton-smith
importance of caring for animals.

After graduating from Penn State with a degree in Dairy Science, I’ve worked in several roles over 25 year. In addition to my current work at Elanco, I’ve managed my family’s dairy farm, worked  for Cornell and Penn State Cooperative Extension, and also spent several years working with Dairy cooperatives, processors and retailers to help them understand dairy production practices and the importance of new ideas and technology to improve animal care. I view the work I do to help farmers keep animals healthy and productive is really one small part in helping to provide food for the more than 7.7 Billion living in the world today!

I met Pierre Ferrari, CEO of Heifer International, during a commemoration honoring the original "Sea Going Cowboys" who cared for heifers during the journey from America to other parts of the world.

I first learned about Heifer International through my church many years ago and became more involved as Elanco became a corporate supporter and engaged partner with Heifer. I’m a strong believer in their approach to help people lift themselves out of the constraints of hunger and poverty through the ideas from that old proverb… “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

“Food is the moral right of all who are born into this world.”     – Norman Borlaug

Lauren Smith: I am a sophomore at the Pennsylvania State University, studying statistics and am active in several organizations on campus, including Dance Marathon and Statistics Club. I am also very interested in climate change and helping those who are suffering most from food insecurity. I graduated from Gettysburg High School in 2018.

When not in school, I live in Gettysburg with my parents Vinton and Sharon Smith and my brother, Collin. I work at a local ice cream shop and restaurant.

I have a dog (Bella), a rabbit (Oliver), a hermit crab, two frogs and two snails. I am very passionate about caring for animals, protecting the environment and helping others in need.
